Dust, Salt and Vibration: Why Protection Outlasts Capacity

The same diesel-BESS equipment installed in the Gobi and on a southern island may last half as long in one place as the other, and the difference is rarely capacity — it is protection. First, dust. Fouling blocks radiator and condenser fins, the engine loses cooling and must be derated; soiling on PV modules can cut yield by 10–30% in arid regions and keeps falling until they are cleaned. Second, salt. Within a kilometre of the coast, ordinary coatings on enclosures and fasteners typically blister within two years, so specifications usually call for C5-M corrosion protection under ISO 12944. Third, vibration. A containerised system must survive sustained road and sea transport; cabinet anchorage, busbar supports and connector locking should be designed for transport conditions, not for a static installation. Three items to check: ingress protection (IP54 as a floor, IP55 in dusty regions), corrosion class, and whether the radiator can be removed for cleaning. These are the easiest lines to drop from a quotation and the ones that decide downtime on site.
