Insulation Beats Batteries on Cost

Half the cost of off-grid camp power is decided inside the wall. The EU LIFE Zero Energy Mod project rebuilt modular habitat envelopes to PassivHaus standards and cut energy use by 85–90%; overall, the shelters used 96% less energy than conventional modular buildings and avoided about 120 tonnes of CO2 a year, while the supply side remained an ordinary combination of solar, wind, batteries and hydrogen. The logic is plain: removing a unit of heating or cooling load is cheaper than generating a unit of electricity. For buyers this inverts the usual instinct — with a fixed budget, upgrade the envelope and airtightness before enlarging the battery or the genset, and the ten-year total cost usually comes out lower.
