Every 1,000 metres of altitude cuts air density by roughly 10%, reducing both the intake air and the cooling available to a diesel engine, which must then be derated; converters face the same thermal limit. The cabin side runs the opposite way: at altitude and low temperature the heating load rises, while a battery loses usable capacity and charge power in the cold. Stack the two and a configuration that is adequate at sea level falls short at 4,500 metres. Projects in China already run hybrid diesel-BESS plants at 5,400–5,800 metres in the Kunlun Mountains to supply works and camps, so it is technically feasible — provided the sizing is recalculated for actual altitude and extreme low temperature rather than carried over from sea-level figures. Cold sites also need battery enclosure heating, and that consumption belongs in the load calculation.
